The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has called for the removal of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) from the envelope budgetary regime to boost its operational efficiency. He made this appeal on Thursday while defending the NPF’s 2025 budget before the Joint National Assembly Committees on Police Affairs and Police Institutions at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
In his presentation, IGP Egbetokun emphasized that exiting the envelope budgeting system would allow for accurate funding projections and improved financial flexibility for the Force. “This adjustment would enable greater flexibility and ensure the availability of funds to manage the Force more effectively,” he stated.
The IGP also proposed the creation of a special operations account exclusively for addressing national security emergencies and recommended increased allocations for overhead and capital expenditures. Additionally, he urged the construction of five new zonal police headquarters and the provision of funds for supporting tactical units critical to internal security.
To enhance capacity building, Egbetokun called for dedicated budget lines for police training institutions. He further stressed the importance of the timely and full release of appropriated funds in 2025 to ensure the smooth functioning of the Force.
Accompanied by members of the force management team and other senior officers, the IGP outlined these critical needs during the budget defense session, underscoring the NPF’s commitment to safeguarding national security and improving its operational framework.
