The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, directed the immediate deployment of additional personnel and resources to Rivers State to enhance security and safeguard lives, property, and critical infrastructure.
In a statement released on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the deployment is part of efforts to strengthen security in the South-South state, ensuring that law and order are maintained.
The deployed operatives will work in collaboration with the Armed Forces and other security agencies.
Egbetokun also reassured the public that while citizens have the right to seek legal redress, any unlawful gatherings, protests, or activities that threaten public peace will be met with the full force of the law.
“The Nigeria Police Force emphasizes that aggrieved individuals retain the right to seek legal redress through appropriate judicial channels.
Consequently, any attempt to exploit the situation through unlawful gatherings, protests, or activities to disrupt public peace will be met with the full force of the law.
Citizens are urged to remain law-abiding, comply with all legal directives, and continue their daily activities without fear,” the statement noted.
The statement further affirmed the Force’s commitment to ensuring peace and stability, urging residents to stay vigilant, report suspicious activities, and remain law-abiding.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining peace and security.
Members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities that may compromise public safety,” it added.
“Individuals or groups with criminal intent are hereby warned to stay away from Rivers State.
Security forces are fully prepared to take decisive action against any threats to the peace and stability of the state,” the statement concluded.
This development follows the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday.
The President also suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the State House of Assembly for six months, appointing Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd) as the Sole Administrator for the state.
