The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has made history by electing Grace Ike, a journalist with Advocate Broadcasting Network (ADBN), as its first female chairperson. Ike was elected unopposed and officially sworn in on Wednesday.

During her inauguration, Ike expressed her commitment to advancing the NUJ FCT council through innovative initiatives.

“With immense gratitude and a profound sense of responsibility, I stand before you today as your elected Chairman of the NUJ FCT council. This moment is both humbling and inspiring, and I thank you sincerely for the trust and confidence you have placed in me,” she said.

Ike also congratulated the newly elected NUJ National President, Alhaji Yahya Alhassan, and his team, pledging the support of the FCT council.

“Your emergence symbolizes a new chapter, and I pledge the unwavering support of the FCT council as we work collaboratively to strengthen the ideals of our profession,” she added.

Ike paid special tribute to the women of the council who supported her campaign, describing their courage and resilience as pivotal to her victory.

“With these words as our guide, we shall chart a course toward unity, progress, and excellence for our union,” Ike concluded, quoting leadership expert John C. Maxwell.

The election also saw Yahaya Ndambabo of Voice of Nigeria emerge as vice-chairman, Jide Oyekunle of Independent Newspaper as secretary, and Sandra Udeike of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria as treasurer. The newly elected officials will lead the NUJ FCT chapter for the next three years.

Ike brings extensive experience to her role, having previously served as the chairperson of the House of Representatives Press Corps and vice-chair of the FCT Correspondents Chapel. She has also worked with Independent Television (ITV) and Silverbird Television.
