The German government, rejected Amnesty International’s claim that Israel is committing “genocide” against Palestinians in its ongoing military operations in Gaza.
Speaking on Friday, German Foreign Ministry spokesperson Sebastian Fischer stated, “The question of genocide presupposes a clear intention to eradicate an ethnic group.
I still do not recognise any such clear intention and therefore I cannot share the conclusions of the report.”
Fischer emphasized that while Germany takes the allegations seriously and is analyzing Amnesty’s findings, it continues to support Israel’s right to self-defense.
“We have repeatedly urged the Israeli government to adjust its military operations in Gaza and better fulfil its obligations to protect civilians.
However, it is still our opinion that Israel is acting in defense against Hamas, which sparked this conflict with its terror attacks,” Fischer added.
Amnesty International’s report, released on Thursday, is based on fieldwork, satellite images, and testimonies from Gaza residents.
It alleges that Israel’s actions are marked by “dehumanising and genocidal statements” from its officials.
The Israeli government dismissed the findings as “entirely false.”
The conflict, triggered by Hamas’s unprecedented October 7 attack, resulted in over 1,200 deaths in Israel, predominantly civilians, according to official figures.
Israel’s retaliatory strikes on Gaza have led to at least 44,580 fatalities, mostly civilians, based on data from Gaza’s health ministry, which the United Nations deems credible.
