Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team, the Falconets, suffered a 3-1 defeat to Germany in their second group stage match of the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
After a morale-boosting 1-0 victory over Korea Republic in their opening match, thanks to a late strike from Flourish Sabastine, the Falconets came into this game with confidence. However, Germany delivered an early blow in the 17th minute when Alara Sehitler scored from a well-placed pass by Zicai, giving the Germans a 1-0 lead by halftime.
The Falconets responded strongly at the start of the second half, leveling the game in the 50th minute through Chiamaka Cristabel Okwuchukwu. But just 11 minutes later, Germany regained the lead as Sofie Zdebel capitalized on another assist from Zicai.
In an effort to change the course of the game, Falconets coach Danjuma introduced Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Opeyemi Esther Ajakaye. Despite their best efforts, the Falconets struggled to break down Germany’s defense, with a goal even disallowed by VAR.
As Nigeria pushed for an equalizer late in the match, Germany sealed the win with a counterattack, as Sarah Ernst scored their third goal.
The defeat leaves Nigeria’s chances of progressing uncertain, pending the outcome of the Korea Republic vs. Venezuela game. Germany, however, have secured their place in the knockout stages. In the final group matches, Germany will face Korea Republic, while the Falconets will take on Venezuela.
