President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate deployment of about 100,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion kits across Nigeria in a bid to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices on citizens.
The directive was disclosed by the Executive Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), Ismaeel Ahmed, after a meeting with the president at the State House in Abuja.
According to Ahmed, the president is closely monitoring global developments affecting Nigeria’s energy market, particularly the effect of tensions in the Middle East on fuel prices and transportation costs.
He explained that the directive forms part of the government’s strategy to expand access to alternative energy sources and reduce the burden of high petrol prices on motorists and commuters.
“The President wanted to know what we are doing at PiCNG to scale up the availability of gas across the country,” Ahmed said.
“He has given a direct mandate that we should immediately deploy about 100,000 conversion kits.”
The CNG conversion kits will allow vehicle owners, including tricycle operators, to convert petrol-powered engines to run on compressed natural gas, a cheaper alternative fuel.
Officials say the rollout will be accelerated in the coming weeks as the government also moves to expand CNG infrastructure nationwide, including refuelling and mobility support systems, in response to rising fuel costs.
Fuel prices in Nigeria have surged above ₦1,000 per litre in recent weeks, a development largely linked to global oil market volatility triggered by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
