The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed the death of four young men who drowned in a blocked waterway at Zangon Kaya in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area on Friday afternoon.
The tragic incident was disclosed in a statement issued by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi.
According to Abdullahi, the emergency call was received at about 1:48 p.m. from one Rabiu Yusif, reporting that four individuals had fallen into a waterway that had become clogged due to ongoing railway construction in the area.
“Two of the victims had entered the waterway to swim and got trapped. A third person attempted to rescue them but also became stuck. The fourth victim, in another rescue attempt, was similarly trapped,” Abdullahi explained.
He added that while residents managed to retrieve two of the victims before the arrival of rescue officials, the remaining two were recovered by the Fire Service team. All four were found unconscious and were later confirmed dead.
The deceased have been identified as Bashir Sani, 28; Nasirudden Tasi’u, 25; Usman Ubale, 26; and Yakubu Muhammed, 22.
Their bodies were handed over to SP Abdulkadir Albasu of the Dawanau Police Division for further action.
Abdullahi attributed the cause of the incident to “local swimming in a blocked sewer,” warning residents to avoid such unsafe practices, especially around construction sites.
