Former Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, dismissed claims that he plans to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) and join the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
His denial follows speculation sparked by the recent defection of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to the SDP, with rumors circulating that other northern politicians might follow suit.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Ezrel Tabiowo, Lawan urged Nigerians to ignore the circulating rumors and reassured his continued support for both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State.
The statement read: “The attention of the Office of Senator Ahmad Lawan, President of the 9th Senate and Distinguished Senator representing Yobe North Senatorial District, has been drawn to misleading reports and posters suggesting that he is set to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
We wish to categorically state that these reports are entirely false, baseless, and without merit.
Senator Ahmad Lawan remains a steadfast and loyal member of the APC, a party he has proudly been part of since its formation.
He is a key stakeholder in the party and will continue to work alongside the government to ensure the success of its collective goals.”
The statement further emphasized Lawan’s political consistency, noting that he has never defected throughout his 25-year career.
Lawan’s political journey began in 1999 when he was elected to the House of Representatives and continued in the Senate from 2007, initially with the All People’s Party (APP), which later became the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP).
The ANPP was one of the three minority parties that merged to form the APC in 2013.
“Senator Lawan is a firm believer in the vision and principles of the APC and continues to work diligently with party leaders and members to strengthen the party and further its agenda for Nigeria’s progress,” the statement added.
Lawan also reiterated his unwavering support for the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni, particularly his efforts to improve governance in Yobe State, as well as his backing for President Bola Tinubu’s transformative policies aimed at addressing Nigeria’s challenges.
“Senator Lawan urges the public, party members, and supporters to disregard these unfounded rumors and posters, which are nothing but the work of mischief-makers seeking to create unnecessary distractions,” the statement added.
“Senator Ahmad Lawan remains focused on his duties as a lawmaker and leader, committed to supporting the APC-led administration in delivering sustainable development and good governance to Nigerians,” the statement concluded.
