The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported that heavy rains and the overflow of the River Niger have displaced ten communities in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The flood, which occurred between September 17 and 22, has left over 2,000 people homeless, forcing them to flee to safer areas.
Mr. Aliyu Shehu-Kafindagi, Head of Operations for NEMA’s Sokoto Office, revealed this during a joint assessment visit to the affected areas. The submerged communities include Kunda, Dala-Maidawa, Dala-Tudu, Dala-Mairuwa, Ishe-Mairuwa, Kwarkusa, Kurmudi, Tugar Maigani, and Gundu.
The displaced residents, mainly fishermen, have also lost large hectares of farmland, with crops such as rice, maize, millet, beans, and guinea corn destroyed by the flood.
An Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp has been established at Tudun Faila Primary School, currently sheltering more than 300 people.
The assessment was carried out in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Shanga LG officials, and security operatives.
