A devastating fire incident at an Islamic school in Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State has claimed the lives of at least 17 Almajiri students, leaving 16 others injured.
The fire, which broke out late Tuesday night, raged for about three hours, causing extensive damage to the study hall of Makaranta Mallam Ghali.
According to local sources, the blaze was reportedly triggered by stored sticks, commonly referred to as “Kara.”
Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing experience, explaining that around 100 students were inside the building when the fire erupted. Although efforts were made to evacuate them, some remained trapped inside.
It was only after the flames subsided that the charred remains of the victims were discovered.
The deceased students were buried on Wednesday in accordance with Islamic rites.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Kaura-Namoda Local Government, Mannir Haidara, stated that he was on his way to the scene and would provide further details as investigations continued.
Authorities and local residents have been left in shock by the tragedy, with calls for improved safety measures in schools and residential areas to prevent such occurrences in the future.
