A devastating fire broke out early Wednesday morning in the Dakata metropolitan area of Kano State, destroying properties worth billions of naira at a recycling hub and market.
Adamu Umar, a security guard at the recycling hub, explained that the fire originated at the recycling center, where plastics and scraps are processed.
He reported seeing electrical sparks from nearby poles, which quickly spread to the groundnut mill market, where food and provisions were sold.
On his first day in office, Kano State’s new Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Bakori, visited the scene of the fire.
Describing the incident as “unfortunate,” Bakori confirmed that one looter had been apprehended after attempting to steal equipment from the site.
He assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted to prevent such incidents in the future.
Bakori also praised the swift response of the Kano State Fire Service and private fire services, whose efforts were crucial in preventing further damage.
Many of those who lost their businesses in the fire were visibly distressed, calling on both the state and federal governments to provide immediate assistance to help them recover.
