A devastating fire swept through the Katako Timber Market in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, on Sunday night, destroying goods worth millions of naira and over 107 shops.
The Chairman of the Plateau State Carpenters Association, Shuaibu Ali, confirmed the incident, describing it as a recurring issue in the market.
Ali recounted, “I received a call around 11:00 pm on Sunday about the fire outbreak.
By the time we arrived at the scene, the fire had already spread extensively.
The heat was so intense that no one could approach it.
We immediately alerted the fire service and security agents for assistance.”
Ali further noted that the cause of the fire remains uncertain, as the market was closed at the usual time prior to the outbreak.
Over 200 individuals, primarily carpenters, have been severely affected by the incident.
Chris, Chairman of Jos North Local Government, also confirmed the incident, stating that the blaze was eventually contained with the help of the Federal Fire Service and other emergency responders.
He added, “We are investigating the cause of the fire outbreak, but as of now, no definitive explanation has been established.”
The fire marks another tragic event in the history of the market, highlighting the need for improved safety measures and emergency response systems to prevent future occurrences.
