The Federal Government has introduced a new consular biometric data verification policy to combat identity fraud, prevent data breaches, and address global security risks.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, announced the approval of ASFAAR.ng, a digital platform developed with inter-agency collaboration for verifying Nigerian travellers. The system supports real-time data processing for destinations such as Gulf and Arab countries — key hubs for Nigerian travellers and businesses.
Tuggar described the framework as offering “mutual benefits” by reinforcing visa integrity, building trust, and ensuring compliance. He, however, noted that adoption by other countries would remain optional.
During a briefing, Lebanon’s Ambassador suggested a bilateral agreement to streamline consular services and processes with partner nations to further enhance travel security.
The minister clarified that the new policy is not intended to replace existing consular services but to improve them.
