Vice President Kashim Shettima has assured that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to tackling Nigeria’s recurring flood disasters through a newly developed comprehensive roadmap. Shettima made this statement during his visit to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Tuesday, where he assessed the devastating impact of recent floods that have displaced several communities.
The Vice President acknowledged the diverse factors contributing to the country’s flood challenges but emphasized that the federal government is determined to address them head-on. He assured the affected communities that their welfare will be prioritized, with immediate and long-term plans in place.
“I am deeply saddened by the flood that has ravaged Maiduguri and its environs. My heart goes out to the families who have lost their homes and livelihoods. Our grief is shared, but so is our resolve to offer support and comfort as you begin the recovery process. Now, more than ever, we are united as a nation to find lasting solutions to these recurring issues,” Shettima stated.
The flood in Maiduguri was caused by excess water from the Alau Dam after the collapse of its spillways, leading to widespread flooding in downstream communities. The Vice President confirmed that efforts are underway to evacuate and resettle affected residents, with provisions for food, shelter, and medical assistance until the situation stabilizes.
“The unprecedented scale of this flood has presented challenges beyond our previous experiences, but the federal government remains steadfast in its commitment to resolving the crisis. In collaboration with the Borno State government, we will continue with the plans already in motion to ensure the safety and welfare of all affected,” Shettima said.
He highlighted the increasing threats posed by climate change, particularly in flood-prone regions like Maiduguri, recalling previous floods in 2012, 2018, and 2022. “The factors contributing to these disasters are numerous, which is why President Tinubu has developed a comprehensive roadmap to tackle them directly.”
Shettima also noted that the government has intensified flood mitigation efforts, focusing on areas prone to erratic rainfall and river basin dynamics. He added that despite implementing comprehensive contingency plans and proactive measures in response to the 2024 Flood Outlook, the severity of the recent floods exceeded expectations, marking the most catastrophic flooding in Maiduguri in over three decades.
“The federal government, in collaboration with Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, remains committed to ensuring that mitigation and recovery efforts reach every corner impacted by this disaster. The safety and well-being of our people are our top priorities,” Shettima concluded.
