The Federal Government, fulfilled its pledge to the family of the late designer of the Nigerian national flag, Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, by presenting a cheque of ₦30 million more than a year after his passing.
The Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, handed over the cheque during a visit to Akinkunmi’s residence in Oyo State.
The presentation was part of his official engagement in the state, which also included a working visit to the NOA Oyo State Directorate in Ibadan and a sensitization meeting with the Tanker Drivers Association at the Akinyele/Moniya Tanker Park.
Speaking at the family house, Issa-Onilu described Akinkunmi as a national legend, emphasizing that the continued use of his flag design reflects the deep respect the country has for his work.
He reassured the family that the Federal Government’s support would not be a one-time gesture.
“This visit is a fulfilment of the promise made by the government during his burial,” Issa-Onilu stated.
“The support will not be a one-off thing, and the visitation will continue from time to time,” Issa-Onilu continued.
Earlier in the day, the NOA DG engaged with tanker drivers, cautioning them about the dangers of reckless driving and the risks associated with fuel scooping.
He warned, “Scooping petrol is akin to stealing; it’s a death wish fraught with dangers.”
He further stressed the hazards of drowsy driving and other unsafe practices that could lead to tanker explosions and loss of lives and property.
Additionally, Issa-Onilu highlighted ongoing nationwide sensitization campaigns on fuel scooping, noting that jingles in about 70 local languages would soon be aired across radio stations.
He also underscored the importance of the National Value Charter, the National Identity Project, and other NOA awareness initiatives.
He urged the media to amplify these messages, saying, “We call on the press to continue spreading these sensitization messages like wildfire.”
The visit reaffirmed the government’s commitment to national recognition, safety awareness, and sustained engagement with key stakeholders in society.
According to him, landlords and landladies must obtain a form from their President-General for each tenant occupying their houses or shops.
“Tenants must fill out these forms using a valid government-issued ID. Landlords and landladies who fail to submit these forms to the government through the President General will forfeit their property and face prosecution.
“Directives for President Generals of Town Unions include, President Generals are now chairmen of the security committee of ‘Agunaechemba’ in their respective communities.
“They must oversee the daily operations of the ‘Agunaechemba’ security outfit and submit detailed monthly reports to the government. Failure to submit these reports will result in suspension and potential sanctions,” the statement added.
According to the statement, the state government also encouraged members of the public to report any suspicious activities or kidnappings to the authorities, adding that a reward of N5 million and above will be given to those who provide valuable information.
“These directives aim to promote a safe and secure environment in Anambra State. The government urges all citizens and stakeholders to cooperate and support these initiatives,” it added.
