The Federal Government plans to invest $2 billion in the deployment of a 90,000-kilometre fibre optic project across Nigeria, according to the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani.
He disclosed this during a visit to Kano State on Monday, where he toured the vandalised digital innovation park of the National Communications Commission (NCC), damaged during the nationwide protests in August.
Tijani highlighted that this initiative aims to expand Nigeria’s fibre optic network from 35,000 km to 125,000 km, significantly enhancing the country’s terrestrial fibre optic infrastructure.
He explained that the project will provide meaningful connectivity to underserved communities, hospitals, businesses, and agricultural sectors.
“To support this vision, the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy is dedicated to strengthening Nigeria’s digital backbone through the National Broadband Alliance,” Tijani stated.
He added, “In partnership with the Kano State government, we are streamlining the process for private infrastructure companies to invest in Kano’s digital economy, transforming the state into a true digital hub.”
The minister emphasised that in today’s world, technology is key to unlocking productivity and driving economic diversification in Nigeria, noting that Kano boasts the highest number of participants in digital initiatives, with over 300 young people involved.
“This is our moment to become a net exporter of technology and talent while boosting local industries. These young people represent not only the future of Nigeria but also of the global digital workforce,” he said.
Tijani also commended IHS Towers for their commitment to rebuilding the innovation park and dispelled rumours about relocating the facility, assuring that it will remain in Kano as a symbol of the state’s and Nigeria’s aspirations to lead in the global digital economy for a prosperous future.
