The Federal Government has initiated an investigation into the alleged substandard feeding conditions at the Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar.
This action follows a viral video report on Facebook, which claimed that inmates at the facility were being subjected to inhumane treatment, including being served poorly cooked beans for breakfast.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, expressed deep concern over the disturbing allegations.
In a statement released on Sunday by his media aide, Babatunde Alao, the Minister described the situation as a severe violation of the standards of care and dignity that inmates are entitled to.
“The Minister views this incident as a serious breach of the standards of care and dignity to which inmates are entitled,” the statement read.
In response, the Minister has ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the matter. He emphasized that those found responsible for these lapses would face appropriate consequences.
Tunji-Ojo further warned that the government would not tolerate any lapses in the quality of food, sanitation, or overall welfare of inmates.
He stressed that the custodial service must uphold the dignity and respect of individuals in its care, regardless of their circumstances.
“The Minister of Interior will not condone any form of mistreatment or neglect of individuals in custody,” the statement added.
The Minister also assured the public that the findings of the investigation would be made public, and any necessary disciplinary actions would be taken to address the situation.
This development comes as part of the government’s broader commitment to ensuring humane conditions in custodial facilities across the country, and the Minister has vowed to uphold these standards rigorously.
