The Federal Capital Territory’s Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) is gearing up to introduce an e-ticketing and central booking system for motorists, aimed at reducing traffic offences and minimizing direct interactions between officers and drivers.
DRTS Director Abdulateef Bello shared details in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, explaining that this technology-driven initiative will automate traffic management and penalties in the FCT. “To achieve this, we’ve engaged multiple service providers in electronic traffic management and penalty systems,” Bello said. “Some companies installed devices at strategic locations on a Proof of Concept basis, demonstrating their ability to interpret infractions and administer penalties.”
He noted that the project will undergo regulatory review, including submission to the Abuja Investment Company and the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission, before full-scale implementation. “We anticipate some of these systems to be operational by the first quarter of next year,” he added.
The e-ticketing system is designed to streamline enforcement, ensuring that motorists receive alerts for infractions directly on their phones, provided their vehicles are registered in the FCT. “This will eliminate conflicts between officers and the motoring public,” Bello said. “Once an infraction occurs, a ticket is issued, and the driver can continue to their destination while receiving a detailed alert on their phone.”
DRTS personnel are currently undergoing training for the e-ticketing rollout, while road officers continue to monitor compliance with the Abuja Inspector App. Bello emphasized the commitment under FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to maintain strict enforcement of traffic regulations and called on motorists to remain compliant by updating vehicle papers and driver’s licenses promptly.
In line with these advancements, DRTS is also moving towards a paperless vehicle administration system, with funding proposed for next year’s budget.
