FCT Schools Shut Amid Fresh Teachers’ Strike Over Unpaid Minimum Wage

Primary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, came to a standstill as teachers launched a strike over unpaid salary adjustments.

With only three days left to conclude first-term examinations, pupils were turned back on Monday, leaving academic activities halted.

The strike stems from unresolved issues surrounding the N70,000 minimum wage promised to teachers.

Despite approvals for the adjustment, payments have not been made, sparking discontent among educators.

This is the second disruption this term, with the first strike in September keeping pupils at home for nearly three weeks.

Teachers resumed earlier but initiated another protest after the December 1 deadline for implementing the new wage passed without resolution.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had declared an indefinite strike on December 1, directing workers across FCT’s six area councils to join.

According to the Nigeria Union of Teachers, area councils owe teachers several allowances, some outstanding for over a year.

The strike will persist until the demands are met, adding to the ongoing labor tensions in the FCT.
