Mounir Nasraoui, the father of 17-year-old Spanish football sensation Lamine Yamal, was reportedly stabbed multiple times in a car park in Mataró, a coastal town north of Barcelona.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night, following an earlier altercation with a group of people.
Spanish media reports that Mr. Nasraoui was attacked by the same group he had argued with earlier in the day while walking his dog.
The assault took place near the Rocafonda neighborhood, where Yamal grew up.
Catalan police have confirmed the arrest of at least three individuals in connection with the stabbing, according to AFP news agency.
Mr. Nasraoui was rushed to a hospital in Barcelona in serious condition but is now reported to be stable.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. However, a report from sports website Relevo indicates that Mr. Nasraoui will remain under observation in the hospital for two to three days.
Lamine Yamal, who became Spain’s youngest-ever player, recently garnered widespread acclaim for his performance at Euro 2024, where he was named Young Player of the Tournament.
The winger played a crucial role in Spain’s 2-1 victory over England in the final, assisting Nico Williams’s opening goal.
Following Spain’s triumph, the streets of Mataró were filled with fans celebrating Yamal’s success.
Having spent his childhood in the town, Yamal later honed his skills at Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy.
