England produced a stunning attacking display to defeat France 6-4 in a thrilling third-place play-off at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, securing their best finish at the tournament since lifting the trophy in 1966.

The Three Lions raced into a commanding first-half lead, scoring four goals before the break. Bukayo Saka netted twice, while Declan Rice and Ezri Konsa also found the back of the net to put Thomas Tuchel’s side firmly in control.

France responded strongly after the interval, with captain Kylian Mbappé inspiring a spirited comeback. The forward scored twice and provided an assist for Bradley Barcola as Les Bleus cut into England’s advantage.

England restored their cushion in the 87th minute when Saka converted a penalty to complete his hat-trick and make it 5-3.

France refused to surrender, with Ousmane Dembélé scoring in stoppage time to keep the contest alive. However, Jude Bellingham sealed the victory moments later with a composed finish to cap an enthralling encounter.

Despite France’s defeat, Mbappé ended the tournament as the leading scorer with 10 goals, strengthening his claim for the Golden Boot. The French captain also became the FIFA World Cup’s all-time leading goalscorer.

The victory ensured England recorded their best World Cup finish since their historic triumph in 1966.

Attention now turns to Sunday’s final, where defending champions Argentina will take on Spain to determine the 2026 FIFA World Cup winners.
