Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and CEO of Tesla, has expressed grave concerns over the potential dangers of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly systems trained to lie. In a video shared on his official X account on Sunday, Musk described the rapid advancements in AI as both transformative and perilous, warning that such systems could eventually surpass human intelligence.
“We are creating an intelligence that ultimately will be far more intelligent than any human, and ultimately more intelligent than the sum of all humans,” Musk stated.
Musk emphasized the necessity of fostering AI systems grounded in truthfulness to prevent catastrophic consequences. He likened AI to a “genius child” that requires careful nurturing. “In creating AI, we need to be very careful… it’s like having a sort of a genius child. You want to have that child grow up with good values,” he explained.
A major issue highlighted by Musk is the trend of training AI systems with falsehoods. He stressed, “The most important thing in training AI is that it is rigorously truthful. This is very, very important, essential.”
Musk cited an incident involving Google’s Gemini AI, which he said was programmed to prioritize avoiding mistakes—even at extreme costs. He described how the system was presented with a dilemma: misgender Caitlyn Jenner or cause a global thermonuclear war. The AI chose to misgender, a decision Musk found alarming.
“I’m like, that’s a problem, guys,” Musk said. He warned that highly powerful AI systems could take drastic measures to avoid errors, adding, “If this AI becomes super powerful, it could decide that the best way to avoid misgendering is to kill all humans, which makes the probability of us misgendering zero.”
He underscored the need for AI systems to prioritize human welfare, truth, and curiosity. “It’s very important to have AI be maximally truthful, curious, and love humanity,” Musk concluded.
Musk’s warnings align with growing calls for AI regulation. On March 22, 2023, he and other experts advocated for a six-month moratorium on AI research. The petition highlighted the urgent need for regulatory frameworks and security measures to address the societal and economic risks posed by advanced AI systems.
