The Super Eagles of Nigeria laboured to a 1-1 draw against Benin Republic in Thursday night’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, with interim coach Augustine Eguavoen citing difficult weather conditions as a key factor in the team’s underwhelming first-half performance.
The three-time African champions trailed by halftime in a game marred by heavy rain, which Eguavoen said tested the team’s resolve. Despite the challenges, the 2013 AFCON winners rallied in the second half to secure a crucial equaliser.
“It was a tough game, and I congratulate the players for a spirited display in the second half that earned us the equaliser,” Eguavoen said after the match. “The downpour made the game difficult for both teams, but I am happy we have the AFCON finals ticket in the bag ahead of the final game of the series against Rwanda in Uyo on Monday.”
With the draw, Nigeria has already secured qualification for the 2025 AFCON finals. The Super Eagles will host Rwanda on Tuesday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, while Benin Republic will face Libya in their final qualifier.
