The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) launched a midnight operation targeting private hostels near Usmanu Danfodiyo University in Sokoto, leading to the arrest of numerous students.
The raid, which occurred in the Kwakwalawa and Gidan Yaro areas, took place at around 4 AM, leaving hostel residents in a state of fear and confusion.
Eyewitnesses reported that EFCC agents conducted indiscriminate arrests, though the commission has yet to release an official statement explaining the reasons for the operation or the charges against the detained students.
This incident mirrors a similar crackdown earlier this year at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), where EFCC agents raided student accommodations at approximately 2 AM.
In that instance, students initially mistook the agents for kidnappers due to the aggressive nature of the raid. Reports from the FUTA raid indicated that personal belongings were damaged, and several students, including females, were allegedly assaulted.
The EFCC’s recent actions have raised concerns about student safety and the heavy-handed tactics employed during such operations.
Many students are now questioning the methods used by the commission in carrying out these raids.
