The Edo State Government has officially lifted the suspension imposed on its state security outfit, now renamed the Edo State Security Corps, following a period of suspension initiated ahead of the September gubernatorial elections.

The outfit, previously known as the Edo State Security Network, was temporarily banned in September 2024 by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as part of measures to ensure election security. The Inspector General’s decision was in line with constitutional provisions designating the Nigeria Police Force, alongside other agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), as the sole authority for election-related security.

In a statement issued Friday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, the government highlighted the significance of the reinstatement, stating:
“The decision made by the Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, marks a comprehensive shift in the state’s quest for enhanced safety and security.”

With the gubernatorial elections successfully concluded, the government has deemed it appropriate to reinstate the security outfit to strengthen the state’s overall security framework and protect its citizens.

As part of the reactivation process, the government directed all returning officers to report to the State Commander’s office or their respective zonal offices in Edo North, Central, and South for redeployment. This measure is intended to ensure a seamless transition and the effective functioning of the corps.

Umar Ikilor, Secretary to the State Government, reaffirmed the administration’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding residents, emphasizing that this decision underscores the state’s dedication to maintaining peace and security across Edo.
