The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has called on stakeholders in the upcoming Edo State governorship election to approach the exercise with a sense of peace and responsibility, reminding them that elections are not a battleground.
In a statement issued by its National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, following a stakeholders’ meeting in Benin, IPAC emphasized that the election is an opportunity for the electorate to choose leaders committed to promoting good governance, accountability, and development.
“Election is not war. It is a democratic process to select leaders who will promote good governance. All stakeholders must prioritize peace, equity, and justice to create an environment conducive to credible elections,” Dantalle said.
He urged candidates and voters alike to adhere to democratic principles, respect each other’s rights, and ensure that the election serves the interests of the people of Edo and Nigeria as a whole. Dantalle also encouraged voters to come out en masse for the election, exercising their civic rights without fear of intimidation.
Additionally, IPAC called on the electorate to vote based on candidates’ manifestos, track records, and leadership qualities, while rejecting any attempts at vote-buying.
“The will of the electorate is sacrosanct and must be respected. Leadership is about selfless service, and no responsible leader should impose themselves on the people,” Dantalle added.
IPAC also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to maintain neutrality and ensure transparency throughout the election process. Their impartiality, the council said, is key to sustaining public trust and confidence in the electoral process.
