The Department of State Services (DSS) has released Ladi Adebutu, the former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State. Adebutu, who was detained on Monday, regained his freedom early Tuesday morning after being questioned by the DSS at its Abeokuta office.
The release was confirmed by Adebutu’s media aide, Afolabi Orekoya, during a phone conversation with Channels Television. The Ogun State PDP Publicity Secretary, Kayode Adebayo, had earlier confirmed Adebutu’s arrest in a statement, revealing it was in connection with an alleged disturbance during the local government elections held last Saturday.
Adebayo’s statement read:
“This is to inform members of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, that the leader of the party has truly been detained by the DSS for charges yet unknown.
However, our principal has called for calm and directed that all members, supporters, and well-wishers should remain assured that this time shall pass; it is one of the prices for our democracy.”
He further disclosed that efforts to secure Adebutu’s release as of late Monday had not been successful.
“Several efforts have been made to secure his bail as of 10 p.m. on Monday, November 18, 2024, either on personal recognition or by a surety, but none has yielded any result so far. His lawyers have been informed and will take it up by tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.”
Adebutu, the PDP’s governorship candidate in Ogun State during the 2023 elections, urged his supporters to remain calm and allow due process to prevail.
