The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, finalized plans to award scholarships to 1,000 students from Kano Central and South Senatorial Districts for degree programs in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
The initiative, facilitated through the Barau I. Jibrin Foundation (BIJF), aims to enhance access to higher education in the region.
The scholarship recipients will be the first batch of students at seven newly established study centres of the Federal University, Dutsin-ma, Katsina State, which will be set up in Kano Central and South Senatorial Districts with Senator Barau’s support.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Deputy President of the Senate, Alhaji Ismail Mudashir, confirmed that arrangements for the study centres were concluded over the weekend in collaboration with the university’s management.
The university was represented at the meeting by Prof. Abubakar Sadik Suleiman, Dean of the Faculty of Management Science and board member of the College of Professional and Continuing Studies, alongside Dr. Jamilu Ajiya, Acting Provost of the College of Professional and Continuing Studies.
According to the statement, “Last year, Senator Barau facilitated the establishment of four study centres in Gwarzo, Danbatta, Dawakin Tofa, and Gabasawa local government areas in Kano North Senatorial District.
Under this arrangement, over 1,000 youths are currently enrolled in various degree programs.”
Expanding on this initiative, Senator Barau is now establishing seven additional study centres in Kano Central and South Senatorial Districts, located in Madobi, Kiru, Tudun Wada, Rano, Gaya, Dawakin Kudu, and Minjibir local government areas.
These centres will offer degree and diploma programs, similar to those in Kano North.
To launch the new centres, the senator is awarding scholarships to 1,000 students from Kano Central and South to pursue ICT-related degrees.
Highlighting the importance of education, Senator Barau, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, stated: “Education is the bedrock of the development of all nations.
I will continue to work towards providing qualitative education to our people across the 44 LGAs.”
This initiative marks a significant step in expanding access to higher education and empowering youth through ICT skills in Kano State.
