Nigerians living abroad contributed significantly to the economy by spending over ₦60 billion during their visits to the country in December 2024, according to Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM).
This figure highlights the growing economic influence of the diaspora community.
Speaking before the National Assembly Joint Committee on Diaspora to defend the commission’s 2025 budget, Dabiri-Erewa revealed that remittances over the last five years have surpassed $90 billion.
She described these financial flows as a critical driver of economic growth and a testament to the diaspora’s active engagement with their homeland.
The NIDCOM boss praised the increasing involvement of Nigerians abroad in nation-building efforts.
She noted that their contributions extend beyond remittances, with many investing in local communities and participating in initiatives such as digital technology training for youths.
Dabiri-Erewa proposed establishing a Diaspora Plaza to strengthen connections between Nigerians abroad and their home country.
She explained that this hub would provide opportunities for engagement and facilitate investments, further boosting economic development.
Meanwhile, Senator Victor Umeh, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora, raised concerns about implementing diaspora voting.
He emphasized the need to resolve existing challenges in Nigeria’s electoral system before extending voting rights to citizens abroad. Umeh stressed the importance of reliable data and systems to ensure a credible process and avoid complications.
The senator also called for increased funding for NIDCOM, advocating for a higher allocation in the 2025 budget to support its initiatives.
He highlighted the importance of harnessing the diaspora’s potential, describing them as a vital resource for national progress due to their exposure to advanced systems and cultures.
Both Dabiri-Erewa and Umeh emphasized the strategic importance of the diaspora in shaping Nigeria’s future.
They urged the government to continue engaging with the community and creating an enabling environment for investment and participation in national development.
