China has urged the United States to engage in dialogue to resolve mounting trade tensions, as both economic giants continue to impose tariffs on each other’s imports.
Speaking at a weekly news conference on Thursday, Chinese Commerce Ministry spokeswoman He Yongqian emphasized the need for a constructive approach to economic disputes.
“China has always advocated that China and the United States should adopt a positive and cooperative attitude towards differences and controversies in economic and trade fields,” she stated.
However, she underscored that any discussions must be based on mutual respect, equality, and shared benefits.
“Threats and intimidation can only be counterproductive. It is hoped that the United States and China will work together… to return to the correct track of resolving issues through dialogue and consultation,” He added.
Tensions have intensified following US President Donald Trump’s decision to increase a blanket tariff on Chinese products from 10 percent to 20 percent this month. Trump, who returned to office in January, has cited the failure of major trading partners—including China, Canada, and Mexico—to curb the flow of fentanyl and its precursor chemicals as justification for the tariffs.
Beijing responded with retaliatory levies of up to 15 percent on key US agricultural exports, including soybeans, pork, and chicken. Additionally, China— the world’s largest steel producer—vowed on Wednesday to take “all necessary measures” to safeguard its interests in response to new US tariffs targeting steel and aluminum imports.
The ongoing trade dispute underscores the deep economic rift between Washington and Beijing, with both sides signaling their readiness to defend their industries while leaving the door open for negotiations.
