A three-storey building in Ekosodin, a community predominantly occupied by students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), collapsed early Saturday morning, leaving several students trapped inside.
The collapse occurred following a heavy downpour that started in the early hours of the day and persisted until about 10 am. Emergency responders were alerted to the scene shortly after the building gave way.
According to a staff member from the university, several occupants have been rescued, while others remain trapped under the debris. Efforts to free those still caught in the rubble are ongoing, with additional assistance being requested to aid in the rescue operation.
As of the time of this report, the university management has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
Authorities are continuing their search and rescue mission.
