Former President Muhammadu Buhari honored former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, in celebration of his 90th birthday.
In a statement released on Friday by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, Buhari praised Gowon for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity and development.
He acknowledged Gowon’s vital role in steering the country through challenging times, stating, “We honor his invaluable contributions to our nation’s continued existence as one, and the progress that has come with that.”
Buhari described Gowon as a distinguished statesman and military leader, noting, “Today we pay a humble tribute to a distinguished statesman and a soldier, who had all the qualities of a successful army commander.”
He further highlighted the enduring pride Nigerians, both young and old, feel for Gowon and the officers he led during critical moments in the country’s history.
“I pay homage to all those who served and laid their lives for the country.
Gowon and the team he led will continue to inspire the younger generations and the country for a long time,” Buhari said.
The former president also commended Gowon for his courageous leadership and his lasting contributions, including the creation of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
He expressed admiration for Gowon’s continued dedication to the nation, particularly through his ‘Nigeria Prays’ initiative.
