Former President Muhammadu Buhari, expressed profound sorrow over the tragic stampedes that recently claimed multiple lives in Oyo State, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Anambra State.
In a statement released on Sunday by his media spokesman, Garba Shehu, titled “Buhari Condoles Loss of Lives in Stampedes, Extends Christmas/New Year Greetings,” the former President extended his heartfelt condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and sympathized with the affected communities.
Buhari also conveyed his support to Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, urging them to relay his prayers and solidarity to the bereaved families and loved ones of the victims.
“I also sympathize with the Catholic community, which has been affected.
May the injured recover swiftly, and may the Almighty grant peace to the departed souls,” Buhari stated.
The former President called on Nigerians to reflect on the noble teachings of Jesus Christ during the holiday season, emphasizing unity, compassion, and peace.
“As we celebrate Christmas and prepare for the New Year, let us remember the values of kindness and love that Christ taught us.
May the year 2025 bring prosperity, peace, and good health to our nation,” he added.
Buhari also sent warm Christmas and New Year greetings to Nigerians, urging them to embrace hope and unity.
The tragedies that prompted Buhari’s remarks include:
Abuja: A stampede during a food distribution event at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, left 10 people, including four children, dead.
Oyo State: A children’s funfair at the Islamic High School, Basorun, in Ibadan resulted in 35 fatalities and numerous injuries.
