President Bola Tinubu is currently holding a significant meeting with Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State and key leaders from Ogoniland at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Governor Fubara arrived at the meeting accompanied by Senator Lee Maeba, with a delegation that included prominent figures such as Senators Magnus Abe, Olaka Nwogu, Bennett Birabi, Barry Mpigi, and Joe Poroma.
Other notable attendees were Chief Victor Giadom, Chief Kenneth Kobani, Monsignor Pius Kii, and Ledum Mitee.
The meeting also featured high-ranking officials from the federal government and related agencies, including Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited; Balarabe Abba, Minister of Environment; Idris Mohammed, Minister of Information and National Orientation; Abubakar Momoh, Minister of Regional Development; and the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
While the specific agenda of the meeting remains undisclosed, the discussions are believed to center on the Ogoni clean-up and the potential resumption of oil exploration activities in the region.
The meeting comes amid demands from a coalition of civil society organizations for the federal government to allocate $1 trillion for the environmental cleanup of the Niger Delta and compensation for affected communities before oil production resumes in Ogoniland.
These organizations, including Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria, Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), and Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), have raised concerns about the environmental and social justice implications of resuming oil production in the area.
Citing the 2011 UNEP report, which documented widespread pollution of land, water, and air in Ogoniland, the groups criticized the government for failing to implement the report’s recommendations fully.
They emphasized the historical environmental degradation caused by oil activities and the need for comprehensive remediation and compensation.
