Nigeria’s Junior Female Yellow Greens marked their long-awaited debut at the 2025 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup with a thrilling two-run victory over New Zealand, a test-playing nation, on Monday in Malaysia.
Rain in Sarawak, which had previously disrupted their opening match against Samoa on Saturday, once again delayed proceedings. However, the Nigerian team was determined not to be denied this time. The match eventually commenced over two hours late, with the overs reduced to 13 per side.
New Zealand won the toss and elected to field first, sending the Nigerian batters to the crease. Captain Lucky Piety delivered a standout performance, hitting Nigeria’s first six in a Women’s World Cup match, as the team posted a total of 65 runs for the loss of six wickets.
In the second innings, the Nigerian bowlers rose to the occasion, maintaining a disciplined approach. Under the guidance of Sarah Bakhita, the team successfully restricted New Zealand to 63 runs, also for the loss of six wickets, sealing a historic victory for the Junior Yellow Greens.
