Suspected bandits have attacked a mining site in Unguwar Magero village, Gurmana ward of Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State, resulting in at least 12 deaths and numerous kidnappings. Eyewitnesses reported that the bandits opened fire indiscriminately on the miners.
This incident is part of a recent surge in violence in the region, which saw another attack the previous day in Bassa community, Shiroro Local Government Area, where bandits also kidnapped an unspecified number of people.
Niger State Acting Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba, has condemned the attack, calling it “satanic, insensible, atrocious, and callous.” He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and the affected communities, praying for the repose of the deceased and quick recovery for the injured.
Governor Garba described the act as “barbaric and vicious” and assured continued support for security agencies in their fight against the rising tide of insecurity. He urged the agencies not to be discouraged by such attacks and reiterated the administration’s commitment to combating criminal activities in the state.
