Chairmen and councillors elected in the October 15, 2022 local government elections in Osun State, as of 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 19, officially resumed their duties at the secretariats of 14 local government areas (LGAs) across the state.
According to an investigation by “The PUNCH”, the elected officials, accompanied by numerous All Progressives Congress (APC) members, returned to their respective offices in the following councils: Ila, Ede South, Ife Central, Ife East, Ife North, Ilesa East, Ilesa West, Boripe, Oriade, and Obokun.
Resumption was also confirmed at the Ejigbo, Iwo, Ayedire, and Boripe LGA secretariats.
Jamiu Olawumi, former Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, confirmed the resumption in an interview at approximately 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
He also reported that there had been no incidents of violence at the local government areas so far.
“We have 14 as of 10 a.m. today.
They are Ila, Ede South, Ife Central, Ife East, Ife North, Ilesa East, Ilesa West, Boripe, Oriade, and Obokun, as well as Ejigbo, Iwo, Ayedire, and Boripe,” Olawumi said.
He further praised the security arrangements in place, noting the presence of police tactical teams, an armed Civil Defence squad, and the Department of State Services (DSS) around the secretariats.
However, he urged the state government to address the ongoing presence of thugs in the area.
“Security is top-notch, and we commend Governor Adeleke for that.
However, we need action on the thugs that have been brought into town.
If you move around, you’ll see unfamiliar faces.
These militants and cultists should not be allowed to harm the people of Osun,” Olawumi added.
Olawumi also called on Governor Adeleke to engage with higher authorities, such as the President, Chief of Staff, or the Inspector General of Police, to ensure that the situation is properly addressed.
He stressed the importance of collaboration between the various levels of government for the development of Osun during the current tenure.
“Our chairmen and councillors are ready to work with him, despite being from different tiers of government,” Olawumi concluded.
