Borno State Deputy Governor, Umar Kadafur, alongside over 100 passengers, narrowly avoided tragedy when a Max Air aircraft encountered an engine fire shortly after departing Maiduguri International Airport.
The incident, which occurred around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, was caused by a bird strike approximately 10 minutes into the Abuja-bound flight. The aircraft’s pilot skillfully executed an emergency landing back at the airport, preventing a catastrophe.
A Max Air staff member, speaking anonymously, confirmed the details of the incident. “Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft struck a bird mid-air, causing one of the engines to catch fire. The pilot acted swiftly to ensure the safety of all passengers,” the source said.
Following the emergency landing, several passengers were visibly shaken, with many opting to retrieve their luggage and abandon their travel plans.
Despite the panic, Max Air promptly dispatched a replacement aircraft from Kano, which safely transported passengers, including the deputy governor, to Abuja.
The flight also carried other prominent figures, including a commissioner, special advisers, and senior government aides.
Meanwhile, the damaged aircraft remained grounded at Maiduguri Airport for repairs, as investigations into the incident began.
Airport authorities praised the crew’s professionalism and reassured passengers of their commitment to safety.
