Bayer Leverkusen and Nigerian forward Victor Boniface will miss Wednesday’s Champions League match against Brest after being involved in a car accident on Sunday.
Boniface was absent from Leverkusen’s training session on Tuesday, and according to reports from Bild and Kicker, he did not travel with the team to France.
The 23-year-old was in an accident on the autobahn when the car he was riding in collided with a truck.
On Sunday, Boniface shared images on social media, showing the damaged black Mercedes involved in the crash, along with pictures of his blood-soaked arm.
Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, addressed the situation on Tuesday, confirming that Boniface escaped serious injury but remains doubtful for the upcoming match.
“It’s still open at the moment.
A situation like this is not easy, and he needs to get over it,” Rolfes said.
“We’re all very happy that nothing serious happened to him,” he continued.
Boniface has been in excellent form this season, scoring seven goals in 10 matches across all competitions.
His likely replacement for the match, Czech striker Patrik Schick, has scored one goal in eight appearances.
