Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, took decisive action against lateness among civil servants during an unannounced visit to the state secretariat on Wednesday.
Arriving at the secretariat around 10:35 am to inspect ongoing renovation projects, the governor was met with an alarming situation—only a few workers were present at their duty posts.
As part of his visit, the governor directed security personnel to lock the gates of the secretariat, leaving hundreds of late-arriving civil servants stranded outside.
The inspection included an assessment of the renovations, such as the installation of new lighting fixtures, but the lack of punctuality among workers quickly became the focal point of the visit.
While touring various ministries, Governor Alia noted the absence of several senior officials, including commissioners. He expressed disappointment at the lack of discipline and commitment displayed by the workforce.
On his departure, the governor addressed the locked-out workers gathered at the gate. He criticized their lax attitude, warning them of the consequences of neglecting their responsibilities.
He emphasized the importance of adhering to rules and fulfilling their duties not just for themselves but for the benefit of the people they serve.
Governor Alia also highlighted the broader implications of such behavior, describing it as a vicious cycle that negatively impacts their families and the state as a whole.
While urging the workers to take their roles seriously, he reminded them that he had the authority to take further disciplinary actions if necessary.
The incident underscores the governor’s determination to instill accountability and efficiency in the state’s civil service, as he continues to prioritize reforms and development across Benue State.
