The Benue State House of Assembly has amended the law renaming Benue State University, Makurdi, which will now be known as Father Adasu University, Makurdi.
The decision was reached on Thursday during plenary in Makurdi, following a debate on the report of the House Standing Committee on Higher Education.
Leading the debate, the Majority Leader, Mr. Saater Tiseer (APC/Mbagwa), explained that the name “Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi” was considered too long.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the institution was originally called Benue State University, Makurdi, before being renamed Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University in December 2024.
During the same sitting, the Assembly also passed amendment bills upgrading the College of Education, Katsina-Ala, and the College of Education, Oju, into degree-awarding institutions.
Presiding over the session, Speaker Alfred Emberga directed the Clerk of the House, Dr. Bem Mela, to read the bills for the third time, after which they were passed into law.
It would be recalled that in December 2024, Governor Hyacinth Alia, who is the visitor to the university, announced the renaming of the institution in honour of its founder, the late Rev. Fr. Moses Adasu, during its combined convocation.
Alia said: “As a way of honouring the founder of this institution, our administration has sent an executive bill to the state assembly for this university to be named after the founder, Rev. Fr. Moses Adasu.”
