The Bauchi Police Command has arrested 62-year-old Tahir Ahmed for allegedly producing counterfeit naira notes.
According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, the arrest followed a report on August 6, 2024.
A concerned citizen traveling from Sabon Garin Narabi in Toro Local Government Area to Bauchi noticed Ahmed’s suspicious behavior.
The citizen reported that Ahmed, who had joined the journey in Tilden Fulani Market, appeared to be converting papers into new one-thousand-naira notes through what seemed like ritualistic chanting.
Upon arriving in Bauchi around Yandoka Road, the citizen alerted the police.
Following an investigation, Ahmed confessed to making the fake notes, and 238,000 naira in suspected counterfeit currency was recovered from him.
The police have launched an investigation to gather more details.
Commissioner Auwal Muhammad has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Criminal Investigation Department to request forensic analysis from the Central Bank of Nigeria to verify the authenticity of the notes.
