Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s petroleum transportation protocols, advocating for the use of railways to move flammable products such as petrol and diesel across the country.
In a statement shared on his X handle on Wednesday, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emphasized the need for safer alternatives in light of frequent tanker explosions.
This followed the tragic incident in Majiya town, Taura Local Government Area, Jigawa State, where a petrol tanker explosion claimed numerous lives.
“The incident in Jigawa is one too many involving tragic petrol tanker explosions in the country,” Atiku said.
“It is about time we explored other means, like rail, for transporting petroleum products around the country,” he continued.
He also stressed the importance of enhancing safety protocols and training for drivers involved in the transportation of hazardous materials.
“It is also pertinent to train drivers involved in the transportation of flammable products and review the protocol for the transportation of petroleum products and other inflammable goods,” he added.
Expressing his condolences, Atiku stated, “I wish to share my grief with the people and government of Jigawa State and ask for an expeditious rescue and control operation.
No resource should be spared in treating the injured.”
He also extended his sympathies to the families affected by the explosion, praying for comfort and eternal rest for the deceased.
The tragic incident, which occurred around midnight on Tuesday, took place when the driver of a petrol tanker lost control near Khadija University, Majiya, while en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State.
The explosion was reportedly triggered by residents rushing to scoop spilt fuel after the tanker overturned.
As of Wednesday, over 140 victims had been buried, with around 90 others receiving treatment in various hospitals across Jigawa State.
