The Anambra State Government, in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Coca-Cola Foundation, and TechnoServe, has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing plastic waste through innovative recycling solutions. During a stakeholders’ meeting on Plastic Waste Recycling at Hilton Leisure Hotel in Awka, Commissioner for Environment Felix Odimegwu emphasized the importance of proper waste separation and recycling to protect the environment.
Odimegwu highlighted the alignment of the Nigeria Plastic Solutions Activity with Anambra’s vision for sustainable development under Governor Charles Soludo. He also announced the second season of the “All Anambra Communities Plastic Waste Recovery Challenge,” which aims to reduce waste, promote recycling, and create jobs, underscoring the state’s dedication to a cleaner and greener future.
The event featured contributions from key stakeholders, including TechnoServe Nigeria’s Senior Programme Manager Benneth Obasiohia, who stressed the significance of collaboration in combating plastic pollution. Obasiohia pointed out that only 12 percent of plastic waste in Nigeria is recycled, urging collective efforts to foster sustainable livelihoods and improve local economies.
Professor Emma Ezenwaji, Chairman of the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) board, and Franklin Nwaribe, Senior Business Advisor, presented on the importance of strategic partnerships for enhanced waste management service delivery. Additionally, Jude Ezeanokwasi from Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s Faculty of Law emphasized the growing need for effective waste management policies and regulations to protect the environment.
Private sector stakeholders, including the Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) and the Anambra State Waste Recyclers Association (ASWRA), shared their challenges in the recycling industry. The Nigeria Plastic Solutions Activity, spearheaded by USAID, the Coca-Cola Foundation, and TechnoServe, aims to intercept plastic waste at its source, transforming it into valuable resources while promoting job creation and sustainability across Anambra State.
