The Anambra State Government has initiated an investigation into the alleged assault of Okey Akaneme, the former President of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture, by officials of the state’s Waste Management Agency (ASWAMA) and police officers.
Felix Odumegwu, the state Commissioner for Environment, confirmed the investigation when contacted on Monday, emphasizing that the government does not tolerate assault. However, he suggested that early findings indicate that ASWAMA officials might not be responsible for the attack.
“The Anambra State Government does not condone assault or any form of extortion by government agents. If any official is found guilty, they will face consequences,” Odumegwu said. “We must thoroughly investigate this incident, but first, we need to prioritize the victim’s medical care and well-being.”
The alleged attack occurred on October 11, at Akaneme’s residence on Obi Lane, America Quarters, Onitsha. ASWAMA officials, accompanied by two policemen from Onitsha Central Police Station, reportedly arrived at his home to address unpaid sanitation fees. Witnesses said Akaneme was assaulted, leaving him with severe spinal injuries.
A close associate, Okechukwu Ani, recounted the incident, stating, “The team entered Akaneme’s home early that morning, demanding his arrest. Akaneme, still in his sleepwear, asked for time to prepare, but they allegedly forced their way in.
Neighbors tried to intervene, but they soon realized the extent of his injuries. They had inflicted near-fatal damage, leaving him unable to move, his neck broken and other injuries sustained.”
Akaneme was initially rushed to Holy Rosary Specialist Hospital in Onitsha, before being transferred to Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital in Nnewi, where doctors confirmed 65% damage to his spinal cord. He is currently receiving advanced treatment at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital in Enugu.
The incident, which was widely shared on social media, has drawn condemnation from local residents and human rights groups, who have criticized the state government’s delayed response and are demanding accountability.
Odumegwu reaffirmed that the government’s priority is Akaneme’s health. “We have been trying to reach the victim to assess his condition and offer assistance. The matter has been reported to the police, and investigations are ongoing. ASWAMA’s waste manager has also been trying to reach out to the victim without success,” he stated.
The Anambra State Police Command has yet to officially comment on the case. However, a senior officer confirmed that the matter has been transferred to the State CID in Awka for further investigation.
