The Anambra State Government has mandated hotel operators and landlords to document and keep records of their guests and tenants as part of new security measures aimed at enhancing public safety.
In a statement released on Friday, the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, stated that the directives were introduced to strengthen the state’s security framework and create a safer environment for residents and visitors.
Failure to comply, he warned, could result in the forfeiture of properties and possible prosecution.
According to the directive, hotel guests must present a valid government-issued identity card, such as a National Identity Card, international passport, or voter’s card, upon check-in.
The hotel management is required to photocopy these documents and submit them to the President-General of the community, who will forward them to the local government mayor and the state government.
“Failure to comply with this directive will result in the forfeiture of the hotel facility and potential prosecution,” the statement emphasized.
Similarly, landlords and landladies must obtain official forms from their community’s President-General for each tenant occupying their property.
“Tenants must fill out these forms using a valid government-issued ID.
Landlords and landladies who fail to submit these forms to the government through the President-General will forfeit their property and face prosecution,” the statement added.
The government also assigned additional security responsibilities to President-Generals of town unions, who are now designated as chairmen of the security committee of ‘Agunaechemba’ in their respective communities.
“They must oversee the daily operations of the ‘Agunaechemba’ security outfit and submit detailed monthly reports to the government.
Failure to submit these reports will result in suspension and potential sanctions,” the statement read.
To further strengthen security efforts, the Anambra State Government urged citizens to report any suspicious activities, including kidnappings.
It also announced a reward of ₦5 million and above for individuals who provide valuable intelligence leading to crime prevention.
“These directives aim to promote a safe and secure environment in Anambra State.
The government urges all citizens and stakeholders to cooperate and support these initiatives,” the statement concluded.
This move underscores the government’s commitment to tackling insecurity and ensuring the protection of lives and property across the state.
