Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal pulled off a sensational 4–3 extra-time victory over Manchester City on Monday night, knocking the European champions out of the FIFA Club World Cup in a pulsating last-16 clash in Orlando.
Striker Marcos Leonardo was the hero for Al-Hilal, netting twice including the decisive winner in the 112th minute to seal a dramatic comeback and book a quarter-final meeting with Brazilian champions Fluminense.
City had taken an early lead in the ninth minute through Bernardo Silva under controversial circumstances. The goal followed a disputed build-up involving Rayan Ait-Nouri and Ilkay Gundogan, with Al-Hilal players protesting for a handball. However, Venezuelan referee Jesus Valenzuela allowed the goal to stand.
Pep Guardiola’s men dominated much of the first half but failed to convert their chances. Al-Hilal goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was in inspired form, denying efforts from Savinho, Gundogan, Josko Gvardiol, and Jeremy Doku. Silva also saw a powerful shot turned away.
After the break, Al-Hilal responded with a quickfire double in seven minutes. Leonardo equalised with a close-range header after City failed to clear a low cross, and Malcom made it 2–1 with a crisp finish from the edge of the box following a counter-attack.
City clawed their way back into the match through Erling Haaland, who bundled the ball home during a goalmouth scramble. But their defensive frailty remained exposed. Malcom appeared to win a penalty moments later, but the flag went up for offside, sparing City further damage. Manuel Akanji also made a last-ditch tackle to deny another Al-Hilal opportunity.
City pressed for a winner late in regulation time, with Akanji hitting the post and Haaland’s rebound cleared off the line. Doku was dragged down in the final seconds, drawing protests from Guardiola, but the match headed into extra time.
Haaland was forced off with an injury early in the additional period, and Al-Hilal capitalised. Kalidou Koulibaly rose to head home a corner and put the Saudis 3–2 up. Substitute Phil Foden leveled again for City with a stunning volley from a Rayan Cherki cross.
But the final blow came in the 112th minute. Leonardo pounced after Ederson spilled a header from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, firing home what would prove to be the match-winner in a breathless contest.
Manchester City, who had entered the tournament with serious intentions, will be left to rue missed chances and lapses at the back. Meanwhile, Al-Hilal celebrated one of the most famous victories in the club’s history as they march into the quarter-finals with belief and momentum.
