Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, distributed 6,000 life jackets to travellers in riverine communities across four local government areas as part of efforts to enhance safety in water transportation.
Flagging off the initiative alongside the clearing of waterways, Governor Aiyedatiwa, represented by his Special Adviser on Transport, Akogun Olugbenga Omole, said the move was aimed at reducing the risk of boat mishaps and mitigating their impact in case of incidents.
Aiyedatiwa emphasized that water transportation could be safe and smooth if obstacles like water hyacinth were cleared from the state’s waterways.
He recalled recent tragic boat accidents in states like Kebbi, Kogi, Niger, and Kwara, which resulted in loss of lives.
He stated, “It is our firm belief that water transportation can be safe and smooth, free from barriers on our waterways.
This event today is not only about providing life jackets but also about clearing water hyacinths to ensure easy commuting, boost commerce, and support sustainable livelihoods.”
Tosin Adebusoye, leader of the boat operators, noted that the clearing of waterways and distribution of life jackets would enhance their income and reduce frequent boat faults.
Gbayi Semoreorioye, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Empowerment and Job Creation, assured the boat operators that they would continue to benefit from Aiyedatiwa’s administration.
