The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, condemned the unlawful dissolution of local government councils by state governors, labeling the act as a treasonable offence.
Fagbemi made the statement on Wednesday, during the opening ceremony of an event hosted by the Nigeria Bar Association in Abuja.
Represented by Tijani Gazali, the Director of Civil Appeals in the Ministry of Justice, Fagbemi pointed out that despite clear rulings from the Supreme Court and constitutional safeguards preventing state governors from interfering in local government affairs, some governors and their state assemblies persist in dissolving elected local councils in violation of the law.
The AGF also criticized the Attorney Generals and Commissioners for Justice at the state level for failing to provide proper legal counsel to their governors, urging that stringent penalties be imposed on any governor who continues to engage in such illegal actions.
