AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Receive Major Boost as Ola Aina Returns to Training After Surgery

Super Eagles defender Ola Aina has returned to full training with Nottingham Forest after recovering from hamstring surgery, offering a significant boost to Nigeria ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Aina had been sidelined for several weeks following the injury he sustained during Nigeria’s World Cup qualifier against South Africa in early September, where he was forced off after just 10 minutes. Upon returning to England, he underwent immediate medical evaluation before club specialists recommended corrective surgery.

The 29-year-old has since followed a structured rehabilitation programme at Forest’s training ground, with club sources confirming that he progressed ahead of schedule and completed each phase of his recovery without complications. His return to full team training this week indicates he is close to regaining match fitness and could be available for selection next month, depending on how he responds to more intense sessions.

His comeback is timely for both Forest and the Super Eagles. The Premier League side, now under the management of Sean Dyche, have struggled with injuries and defensive instability, and Aina had been one of their most consistent performers before his setback—providing solidity at the back and valuable attacking support from the flanks.

With Forest battling relegation, Dyche is expected to integrate Aina back into the squad as soon as he is fully ready.

Aina’s absence also saw him miss Nigeria’s last four international matches, including crucial World Cup playoff fixtures. However, his recovery keeps him on track for the 2025 AFCON, which kicks off on December 21 in Morocco. He is expected to play a key role as Nigeria look to rebound from recent disappointments and mount a strong title challenge.
